Have you ever seen a lot of symbols in your writing? It’s called Punctuation. Do you know what are they and also how to use them? To know about it, Let’s study Punction.

 

Punctuation is an essential aspect of writing that helps us convey our thoughts and ideas clearly. It is a set of marks used to regulate texts and clarify their meanings. In this section, we will cover some of the basic punctuation rules that everyone needs to know.

1. PERIOD / FULL STOP (Titik)

A period is used at the end of a statement. It is also used in abbreviations such as Mr., Dr., etc. Make sure to put only one period at the end of a sentence.

Example:

  • I am going to the store.
  • The U.S.A. is a great country
  • Today I learned how to use a period in a sentence.

2. COMMA (koma)

A comma is used to separate phrases or items in a list or Show a break in a sentence

Example:

          • I need to buy an apple, an orange, and a banana.
          • As the day came to an end, the fire fighters put out the last spark

3. EXCLAMATION POINT (Tanda Seru)

An exclamation point is used to show excitement or emphasis a strong feeling at the end of a sentence.

Example:

  • I can’t believe how great of a day it is today!
  • Wow ! Today has been awesome

 

4. QUESTION MARK (Tanda Tanya)

A question mark is used at the end to Ask a Question.

Example:

              • Can you help me carry it in this box?
              • Where are you from?

5. APOSTROPHE (Koma Atas)

An apostrophe is used to show possession/missing letters

Example:

  • Jonah’s new box of markers had fifty different colors.
  • They’re going to the movies tonight.

 

6. SEMICOLON (Titik Koma)

A semicolon is used to join two independent clauses that are closely related.

Example:

  • Melissa went to the library to study; it was the only place quiet enough for her to focus.
  • My daughter is a teacher ; my son is a doctor

 

7. COLON (Titik Dua)

A colon is used to introduce groups of words in a series or introduce a quote.

Example:

  • Frank was going to buy three things: a lamp, a couch, and a book.
  • You have 2 choices: Finish the work today or lose the contract

 

 

7. QUOTATION MARK (Titik Dua)

Quotation marks are used to mark the beginning and end of a quote or to show speech used in a sentence.

Example:

                  • “I’m excited to go to the zoo this weekend,” exclaimed Molly.
                  • ” I work in Italy” said Jimmy.
