What Are Can and Could?
Both can and could are modal verbs – special helping verbs that
express ability, possibility, permission, and requests. They shape the
meaning of a sentence without changing its main verb.

Can
Used for present or future certainty, general ability, and direct communication.

Could
The past tense of can, but also expresses polite requests, hypothetical scenarios, and softer possibilities.

Can: Present Ability & Certainty

  1. Use can to express what someone is able to do right now or as a general truth. It communicates confidence and directness.
    • “I can speak three languages.”
  2. It also describes strong, factual possibilities:
    • “It can get very cold here in winter.

Can carries a tone of certainty — there’s no doubt involved.

Could: Past Ability & Politeness

Could is versatile — it looks backward to past abilities and forward with polite, softer expressions.

  1. Past Ability “When I was young, I could run fast.”
  2. Polite Requests “Could you please help me?”
  3. Uncertain Possibility “It could rain later.” – softer, less definite than can.
