What Is the Future Perfect Tense?

Completion Before a Future Moment

Describes an action that will be completed before a specific future time or event arrives.

The Past in the Future

Think of it as looking back from a future point to see what will already be done by then.

Example in Action

By 8 PM, I will have finished my homework. — The homework is done before the 8 PM deadline.

How Is It Formed?

The Formula

Subject + will + have + past participle

The past participle is the verb in its third form (finished, completed, left, eaten).

Positive Examples

  • She will have left by noon.
  • They will have completed the project by Friday.

Variations

Negative Form

  • will not (won’t) + have + past participle
  • Example: I won’t have finished by Monday.

Question Form

  • Will + subject + have + past participle?
  • Example: Will you have arrived by 6 PM?
