What is a News Item Text?

The Social Function

  • The Main Goal:
    • To inform readers about important events of the day.
    • To present facts without the writer’s personal opinion (objectivity).
  • Think of it as: The “news” you read in a newspaper, watch on TV, or see on a news website.

Generic Structure (The 3 Main Parts)

  • 1. Newsworthy Event: The main headline and the summary of the most important information (usually answers what, who, when, where).
  • 2. Background Events: The details behind the headline. Elaborates on how and why the event happened.
  • 3. Sources: Comments or statements from experts, witnesses, officials, or authorities related to the event.
