Simple Past Tense and Past Continuous Tense

INTRODUCTION

In English, we use tenses to show time. Two important tenses to talk about the past are:

  • Simple Past Tense

  • Past Continuous Tense

Both are used to describe past events, but they have different functions.

SIMPLE PAST TENSE

🔹 Definition

The Simple Past Tense is used to describe:

  • An action that started and finished in the past

  • A completed event at a specific time in the past

The time is usually mentioned or understood.


🔹 Sentence Patterns (Formulas)
✅ Positive Sentence

Subject + Verb 2 (Past Form)

  • I played football yesterday.

  • She went to the market last night.

⚠️ Note:

  • Regular verbs → add -ed (play → played)

  • Irregular verbs → change form (go → went)


❌ Negative Sentence

Subject + did not + Verb 1

  • I did not play football yesterday.

  • She did not go to the market.

⚠️ Important:
After did not, always use Verb 1, not Verb 2.


❓ Interrogative Sentence (Question)

Did + Subject + Verb 1?

  • Did you play football yesterday?

  • Did she go to the market?


🔹 Time Expressions (Signal Words)

Common time signals for Simple Past Tense:

  • yesterday

  • last night / last week / last year

  • two days ago

  • in 2022

  • this morning (if already finished)


🔹 Examples in Context
  • We studied English last night.

  • My father worked until midnight.

  • They won the competition last year.



PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE
🔹 Definition

The Past Continuous Tense is used to describe:

  • An action that was happening at a certain time in the past

  • A past action that was in progress (not finished at that time)


🔹 Sentence Patterns (Formulas)
✅ Positive Sentence

Subject + was/were + Verb-ing

  • I was reading a book at 8 p.m.

  • They were playing basketball yesterday afternoon.

⚠️ Note:

  • Use was → I, He, She, It

  • Use were → You, We, They


❌ Negative Sentence

Subject + was/were + not + Verb-ing

  • I was not sleeping at that time.

  • They were not playing football.


❓ Interrogative Sentence (Question)

Was/Were + Subject + Verb-ing?

  • Was she studying last night?

  • Were they watching TV at 9 p.m.?


🔹 Time Expressions (Signal Words)

Common time signals for Past Continuous Tense:

  • at that time

  • at 7 p.m.

  • while

  • when (to show interruption)


🔹 Examples in Context
  • I was doing my homework at 7 p.m.

  • She was cooking when I arrived.

  • We were waiting for the bus this morning.


USING SIMPLE PAST & PAST CONTINUOUS TOGETHER

These two tenses are often used in one sentence to show:

  • A long action (Past Continuous)

  • A short action that interrupts it (Simple Past)

Past Continuous + when + Simple Past

  • I was studying when my friend called me.

  • She was sleeping when the alarm rang.

🔹 Pattern 2

Simple Past + while + Past Continuous

  • I met my teacher while I was walking to school.

  • The lights went off while we were watching TV.


COMMON MISTAKES TO AVOID

I was went to school yesterday.
✅ I went to school yesterday.

She did not went home.
✅ She did not go home.

They were play football.
✅ They were playing football.

SUMMARY
  • Simple Past Tense describes completed actions in the past.

  • Past Continuous Tense describes actions that were happening in the past.

  • Use both tenses together to show interruption in the past.
