What’s recount text?

A recount text is a type of text that retells events or experiences that have already taken place. The purpose of a recount is to give an account of what happened, often in chronological order, and to provide details that help the reader visualize and understand the sequence of events.

The Function of Recount Text:

  • To tell experiences in which the writer was personally involved.
  • To inform the readers by telling the past events historically and achievements in a person’s life.
  • To chronicle past event regarded as historically significant.

Generic Structure of Recount Text:

  1. Orientation:
    • tells who is involved in the story, when, where, and why the story happened.
  2. Series of events:
    • tells what happened in the story.
  3. Re-orentation (optional):
    • tells the conclusion of the story.

Recount texts are common in various genres, including personal narratives, historical accounts, news reports, and more. They typically include details such as who was involved, what happened, when it occurred, where it took place, and why or how it happened. The language used in a recount is often straightforward and factual, aiming to convey information in a clear and organized manner.
