Comparison Degree

compare

Comparison degree, also known as degree of comparison, is a grammatical and linguistic concept used to describe the different forms of adjectives and adverbs that are used to compare the qualities of different things or the manner in which something is done. In English, there are three degrees of comparison: positive, comparative, and superlative.

  1. Positive Degree: The positive degree is the basic form of an adjective or adverb, without making any comparison. It is used to describe a single item or to make a simple statement about a quality. For example:
    • This building is as high as Eiffel Tower
    • My brother is as fat as my dad
    • I am as active as kids

  1. Comparative Degree: The comparative degree is used when you want to compare two or more things to show which one has a higher or lower degree of a particular quality. To form the comparative degree, you typically add “-er” to the end of one-syllable adjectives or use “more” with most two-syllable adjectives and adverbs. For example:
    • My house is smaller than yours
    • She is more beautiful than Hollywood artists

  1. Superlative Degree: The superlative degree is used to compare three or more things and identify which one has the highest or lowest degree of a particular quality. To form the superlative degree, you typically add “-est” to one-syllable adjectives or use “most” with most two-syllable adjectives and adverbs. For example:
    • My town is the smallest town in this country
    • She is most beautiful girl in this country
