Introduction

In Grade 7, students learn Procedure Text to explain how to make food or drinks. This type of text helps students understand instructions step by step. By learning procedure text, students can follow recipes easily and explain how to make simple food and drinks in English.


1️⃣ What Is a Procedure Text?

A Procedure Text is a text that tells us how to make something or how to do something in the correct order.

Example topics:

  • How to make fried rice

  • How to make a cup of tea

  • How to make fruit juice


2️⃣ Purpose of Procedure Text

The purpose of a procedure text is to give instructions so the reader can make food or drinks correctly and safely.


3️⃣ Generic Structure of Procedure Text
1. Goal

The goal tells what we want to make.
Example: How to Make a Glass of Orange Juice.

2. Ingredients / Materials

This part lists the ingredients or tools needed.
Example: oranges, sugar, water, blender, glass.

3. Steps

Steps explain the process in order.
They usually use numbers (1, 2, 3, …).


4️⃣ Language Features

Procedure text uses:

Imperative sentences (commands)

  • Cut the vegetables.

  • Pour the water.

  • Mix the ingredients.

Action verbs

  • cut, pour, boil, fry, stir, mix

Sequence words

  • first, next, then, after that, finally

Simple Present Tense


Example 1: Procedure Text (Food)
How to Make Fried Rice

Goal:
To make simple fried rice.

Ingredients:

  • 1 plate of cooked rice

  • 1 egg

  • 2 cloves of garlic

  • Salt and soy sauce

  • Cooking oil

Steps:

  1. Heat the oil in a frying pan.

  2. Crack the egg and stir it.

  3. Add the garlic and fry until fragrant.

  4. Put the rice into the pan.

  5. Add salt and soy sauce.

  6. Stir well and cook for 3 minutes.

  7. Serve the fried rice on a plate.


Example 2: Procedure Text (Drink)
How to Make a Cup of Tea

Goal:
To make a cup of tea.

Ingredients:

  • 1 tea bag

  • Hot water

  • Sugar (optional)

  • A cup

Steps:

  1. Put the tea bag into the cup.

  2. Pour hot water into the cup.

  3. Wait for 2–3 minutes.

  4. Add sugar if you like.

  5. Stir the tea and enjoy.


Example 3: Short Procedure Text
How to Make Chocolate Milk

Ingredients:

  • Milk

  • Chocolate powder

  • Sugar

Steps:

  1. Pour the milk into a glass.

  2. Add chocolate powder and sugar.

  3. Stir well until mixed.

  4. Drink it cold or warm.
